Chapter 35: The Rehearsal
The rehearsal was at five on Friday, two days before the wedding, in the Grange hall at Owls Head.
The doors were thrown open to the evening.
The hall had been cleaned for the first time in thirty years.
Someone had hung white lights from the rafters.
Eighty folding chairs faced a stage hung with branches of spruce and wild beach roses.
The plastic skeleton was gone.
Paulie stood in the center aisle in a sundress and sneakers with a clipboard.
She looked at the chairs with the face of a woman who had counted them nine times.
"Eighty," she said. "I ordered eighty-two."
"You ordered eighty," said Gordie.
"I ordered eighty-two."
"Then someone stole two chairs," Gordie said.
"Who steals a folding chair?"
"It's Owls Head," said the officiant, who had come in with a Bible and a plastic bag of lemon drops. "People take things."
He was a retired county judge, small and bald and merry, and he had married half of Knox County.
He took the lemon drops out and offered them around.
"Right," he said. "Maid of honor and best man. Come forward."
Eben and I stepped out of the second row.
"Now you come down the aisle together," said the judge. "You've done it before?"
