Chapter 37: Daylight

We got home at ten past one in the morning with sparkler ash in our hair.

The truck coughed up the long dark drive and stopped at the porch.

The house stood white under the stars with one light in the bay window, where the little spruce from Christmas had been replaced by a lamp.

Eben cut the engine.

We sat for a moment, listening to the water.

"It's after midnight," I said.

"I know."

"Rule one is over," I said.

"I know."

"Rule two was over in a parking lot," I said.

"I know," he said. "I've been waiting for you to stop talking."

I laughed.

He got out and came around and opened my door.

My heels were in my hand, and my feet were bare on the cold gravel.

He swept me up in his arms, dress and all, and carried me up the porch steps.

"You'll drop me."

"I've hauled four hundred pounds of lobster," he said.

"I am not four hundred pounds of lobster!"

"You're lighter," he said, and kicked the door open.

He set me down in the front hall.

The house was quiet and smelled of pine and the sea.

I turned my back to him.

"Zipper," I said.

He undid the hooks of the sage-green dress one at a time, carefully, with his knuckles brushing the length of my spine.

It slid off my shoulders and pooled on the floor.

I turned around in my slip, and he stood there with his tie undone and his jacket open, looking at me.
