Chapter 19: Not on That Blade
The point of the silver blade dented the skin under Calla's jaw, and a bead of blood ran down her throat.
"Garrick, no," she whispered. "Please. Please, I love you."
"You love me."
"I did it for you!"
"You did it to my son."
His hand was shaking so hard the blade shivered.
Nobody in the hall moved to stop him.
The elders did not.
The western Alpha did not.
Bram started forward, and Wynne put out a hand without looking and stopped him.
She walked across the floor.
She laid her fingers over Garrick's wrist, and he looked at her with his whole face wet.
"He called for me," he said. "She told you. He called for me and I was in the water."
"I know."
"I'll kill her."
"I know you want to."
"Then let me."
"No."
She said it quietly.
He stared at her.
"Eli's name will not be on that blade," Wynne said. "You will not stand over his grave a murderer, and she does not get to have you do it. She doesn't get to be the last thing you ever did."
"Then what is left?"
"You live with it."
It was the cruellest thing she could have said, and she knew it.
She said it anyway.
He made a raw noise in his throat.
His fingers opened.
The blade rang on the stone.
Calla dropped to her knees and began to sob.
Wynne did not look at her again.
The western Alpha rose.
He spoke slowly, and the hall listened to every word.
"Calla Greaves. You are found guilty of the murder of a child of this pack, and of poisoning, and of silver set against a Luna. By the law of three packs, you are named rogue."
