Chapter 17: The Captain
The war-captain did not say a word until we were out of the hall.
He walked ahead of me down a stone passage that smelled of horse and boiled leather, with his hands behind his back.
Haldane's wolf padded at my heel, and the captain kept glancing back at him.
"Is he going to bite me?" he said at last.
"Only if you're rude to me."
"Then I'll be careful."
He pushed through a double door into a long barracks hall, and the smell hit me like a wall.
Seventeen men lay on cots in rows.
Some had bandages gone brown and stiff, and one had a thigh swollen tight as a drum under a rag.
Nobody said a word, and they all looked at me.
"Raid wounds," said the captain flatly. "Five days old."
"Five days?" I said. "The Seal's healer has been here?"
"She came once. She said the garrison is the Seal's concern only when the Seal pays for it."
His jaw worked.
"I have buried one man already. I will not bury a second."
