Chapter 17: Day Three
On the third day Rongan woke with a clear head, and for a long minute he did not know what was wrong.
Nothing was wrong. The fever had gone out of his blood in the night, and left him loose and heavy and entirely himself.
Sunlight lay across the nest of quilts. The lake glittered through the glass.
Wenzhou sat cross-legged beside him in a clean white shirt, with his glasses on, holding a bowl.
"Eat," he said.
"I'm not hungry."
"You've eaten two crackers in two days. Open your mouth."
Rongan opened it. Wenzhou fed him congee from the cooler with a spoon, one mouthful at a time, with grave attention.
It was absurd. It was the best breakfast of his life.
"You're doing this on purpose," Rongan said, around a mouthful.
"Doing what?"
"Making me feel looked after."
"Yes." Wenzhou scooped another spoonful. "Is it working?"
"Yes."
"Good."
When the bowl was empty, Wenzhou set it aside and pulled his shirt over his head.
"It's nearly done," he said. "The doctor said the third day ebbs. Do you feel it?"
