Chapter 11: Drink First

Bess arrived at the gate before I did, in her canvas jacket, with a coffee pot in one hand.

"Morning," she told Delaney. "Early for visiting."

"I won't stay," Delaney said. "I just couldn't sleep. I kept thinking about the baby."

Gideon woke at the sound of voices and climbed out of the cab, stiff and rumpled.

He saw her and stopped.

I saw him remember rule one.

"Laney," he said, carefully. "You shouldn't be here."

"I know. I'm so sorry." She wiped her cheek with her wrist. "I only wanted to make this right. Luna, please. You've had no breakfast and you're eating for two."

She held up the thermos with both hands.

"Chamomile," she said, soft and bright. "With honey. It's the only thing that settled my mother when she was carrying. Please, Maeve. Let me do one kind thing."

The pink ribbon fluttered.

Bess looked at me.

The neighbors had started to gather again at the end of the lane. Two of them had brought coffee cups.

I came down the steps and across the yard and stopped at the gate.

Gideon stood on one side of me and Delaney on the other. Bess was at my shoulder.

"That's kind," I said.

Delaney's whole face softened with relief.

"Is it chamomile?" I asked.

"Just chamomile. And honey," Delaney said.

"Same as every morning."

"Of course."

"Then you drink first," I said.

A silence fell over the gate.

Delaney blinked.

"I'm sorry?"

"Pour a cup, and drink it. Then I will."
