Chapter 7: Red Cloaks
He carried me down from the tower into a small stone room with a fire and one chair.
He put me in the chair and sat on the floor in front of it, where I could see his hands.
I wrote on a fresh slate.
*Tell me.*
He did not stall.
"My father was Alpha of Blood Moon before me," he said. "I was thirteen the night your valley burned."
His voice was flat.
"We saw the fire from the ridge. My father rode out at dawn with forty men to help."
"There was nothing to help."
I held very still.
"He found the whole valley dead," Caius said. "Two hundred people. The fields burning. A scrap of red cloth in a dead man's hand, with our moon stitched on it."
"My father swore on his life that none of ours had been there."
"Nobody listened."
My throat had gone tight.
*Who spoke against him?*
"Merrick Ashdown," Caius said. "He stood before the Council and swore he saw Blood Moon's banner on the ridge, and that he had counted our cloaks."
"The Council hanged my father at our own gate in the spring."
"They made me watch."
He said it plainly.
Then he lifted his eyes and I saw what it cost.
"My uncle took the Beta's chair," he said. "He raised me. He has held this pack together for eighteen years, and I owe him everything."
I did not write anything.
I looked at the fire for a long time.
Then I picked up the chalk.
*I was six.*
*I hid in the bread oven. My mother put me there.*
*Red cloaks came into the kitchen and pulled her out by her hair.*
