The moon rose over the north pasture at a quarter to six, enormous and white, and the snow turned blue.
Thirty-one people stood in a wide ring on the open field, bare-headed in the cold.
A fire burned in the middle, a tall stack of larch logs, and the sparks went up past the moon.
I walked to the fire in my camel coat and my red lipstick, with the yellow page of the deed in my hand.
I had read it forty times.
Lorcan was waiting on the other side of the flames.
He had taken off his coat.
He wore a white shirt open at the throat, and his hair was loose over his shoulders, and the firelight made his eyes burn gold.
He did not look at the pack.
He looked at me the whole way.
When I stopped in front of him, the old woman with the white braid stepped into the ring and raised both hands.
