Chapter 18: Seats 1A and 1B

The departures hall at Sea-Tac was loud and bright, and I walked through it in a gray hooded coat with two Stonehaven guards three steps behind me.

At the airline desk I slid Joan's printed itinerary across the counter.

"Nice, tonight," I said. "Seat 1A. I want to change it to economy."

The agent looked at the screen and frowned.

"Economy is full, ma'am. The only seats left on that flight are in the front cabin."

"Then put me anywhere that isn't the front."

"I'm sorry. 1A and 1B are what's open."

Joan had booked me two seats in the front, and I had a good idea who she'd booked the second one for.

Vaughn was in the Tower. The guards behind me had orders to see me to the gate and no farther.

I took my boarding pass and turned around.

Corbin was leaning on a cane by the pillar.

He wore a plain dark coat over a hospital shirt, and his leg was bandaged under the trouser.

I had not seen him walk in.

"Don't," I said.

"I'm not here to talk," he said. "Joan sold me 1B. She said you'd be hard to keep alive without a second seat."

"Joan did what?"

"She said Redmaw is at every gate." He kept his voice low. "I won't sit next to you if you say no. I'll fly in the cargo hold. I'll just be on the plane."

I stared at him.

His eyes were bloodshot, and there were fresh lines at the corners of his mouth.

"You can barely walk," I said.

"I walked here."

"You're a liability, Corbin."

"I know," he said. "That's why I'm not asking."

I turned away from him and walked toward security.

He followed at a distance, and I could hear the cane tapping behind me.
