Chapter 20: Three Steps

The Valen Manor stood on a cliff above the sea, a white house with long balconies and tall shutters, and wolves stood at every gate.

They were old Stonehaven wolves in plain gray suits, and they bowed to me as the car drew up.

A silver-haired man in a linen jacket came down the steps.

He was the owner, and he had been my father's friend for forty years.

"I saw your husband on the news," he said, and he took my hands. "I changed your booking. Nobody gets past my gates tonight."

"He's not my husband," I said.

"Then he's your guest," the owner said calmly. "And a man who kneels in front of forty countries has earned a bed."

He led us up to the top floor.

Two suites stood side by side, with a carved wooden door between them.

My room had a four-poster bed and a wall of glass facing the water.

I walked in, set down my bag, and stopped.

A huge bouquet stood on the dresser in a white vase.

Pink hyacinths.

The scent hit my throat before my eyes could read the card.

My lungs closed, and I grabbed for the injector in my coat.

Corbin was through the connecting door before I got the cap off.

He took one look at the dresser and crossed the room in two strides.

He picked up the vase, bouquet and water and all, and threw it over the balcony rail.

I heard it smash on the rocks below.

Then he tore the card off the floor and read it.

His face went black.

"Welcome home, heir," he read out. "D.M."
