Chapter 28: Auction Day
Gran picked the envelope up off her lap.
She held it out to him between two fingers.
"Take this with you," she said. "I don't keep trash in my barn."
He didn't take it.
So I did.
I walked it back up the aisle and put it in the lawyer's hand, and then I turned around to the tables.
"Wednesday, ten o'clock," I said. "Anybody who actually likes me, bring a chair."
The older brother stood up first.
Then all three hundred.
Shane kept smiling all the way to his car.
But he walked faster than he'd come in.
On Wednesday morning, the lawn looked like my wedding.
Rows of folding chairs under the cherry trees.
A table where the arch had been.
The auctioneer stood behind it with a microphone, a gavel and a cup of coffee from our stand, which he'd paid for.
The front row was Luke's father and five of his investors from the hotel dinner.
Shane stood next to the lawyer, in the navy suit.
And everybody else stood behind us.
Gran in her wheelchair in the middle of the aisle.
Megan on one side of her.
Luke on the other, in Grandpa's boots and a clean farm T-shirt.
