Chapter 22: Spring Dinner
By April the forsythia had come out along the seawall, and the lawn at Gull Point was the yellow of a school bus.
I sat at the long table with Caspar's hand on my knee under the cloth.
He had put it there when the soup came and hadn't moved it since.
Nobody at the table looked surprised by that anymore.
The trustee had her legal pad and her pen.
Clive sat at the very end now, in a chair beside the sideboard, in a plain gray jacket with no crest.
He had lost weight in a way that made his collar gape.
Next to him sat a tall woman in a black suit, with a leather briefcase on her lap.
She was the fourth lawyer he had hired since November.
"Madam trustee," she said, standing. "My client's position is simple."
"The will requires a woman Mr. Caspar Kell has been with the whole year."
