Chapter 26: Everything but the Sentence

Rafe put himself between us without a word.

"Move, Lanier," Boone said. "I'm not here to fight."

"Then say why you're here."

"I came to see my shop one more time. I didn't know you'd beat me to it."

His voice was flat and tired.

He wasn't drunk.

I had been married to him for fifteen years, and I knew every kind of drunk he had.

This was only Boone with nothing in his hands.

"Rafe," I said. "Let him talk."

Rafe stepped to the side, but he did not go far.

I set the toolbox on the gravel.

Boone looked at it and then at me.

"That's Walt's."

"Yes."

"I should have given it to you years ago."

"You should have given me a lot of things."

He nodded slowly.

"I sat in that truck for an hour. I could hear you, Annie. Through the wall."

My face went hot, and Rafe took a step.

"Stay there," I told him.

I looked at Boone.

"Does that make you feel better?" I said. "Or worse?"

"Worse." He rubbed his jaw. "I thought it would feel like winning something. It doesn't."

"What do you want?"

He took a folded paper from his shirt pocket.

"The land, the shop and the house on Birch Street. They're all still in my name. I had a lawyer in Columbus draw up a transfer. You sign it, and it's yours. All of it, free and clear."

I stared at the paper.

"There's a buyer in Columbus who wants the lot for a car dealership," he said. "He closes Friday week. If you sign first, you sell it, and you keep the money."

"And Krista?"

"She's gone. She took the baby to her sister's." He swallowed. "I don't blame her."
