Chapter 18: Her Parents
My parents arrived from Erie on Thursday evening in a dented Buick with a casserole on the back seat.
They had driven two hours through sleet to be in the gym for the vote.
They had also read every word of the tabloid, and they had not said a thing about it on the phone.
My father got out of the car first, in his old postal jacket, and looked up at the bell tower.
"Smaller than I remembered," he said.
"Hello, Dad."
"Hello, Edie-bug."
He hugged me hard enough to lift my feet, and I smelled sleet and pipe tobacco and thirty years of cold mornings.
Then he set me down and looked past my shoulder.
Mal stood at the lodge door in a clean flannel shirt.
He held his scarred hand a little away from his body.
My father walked right up to him.
"So you're the husband."
"Yes, sir."
"Don't sir me. I carried mail forty years. I've been called worse by better dogs."
