Chapter 18: The Chair
The Halloway Holdings boardroom was on the thirtieth floor, with a table of black glass.
Nine directors sat around it, and they had known Rhys since he wore a school blazer.
I came in at four minutes past four and stood by the wall behind the last chair.
Nobody asked me to sit.
Rhys stood at the head of the table with a single sheet of paper in his hand.
He had shaved, and his suit was clean, and under his eyes there were gray marks.
He saw me, and for a moment his voice stopped in his throat.
Then he went on.
"I'll be brief," he said. "My cousin has told the court that I made a false engagement to hold this company."
"He is wrong about what I felt. He is right about what I did."
The directors shifted in their chairs.
"I said fiancee in a room before I told her what it meant," Rhys said.
"I knew what it meant to me. That is a motive, and it has hurt a woman I care for."
