Chapter 17: Interview Room
The interview room at the Corbin County sheriff's office had one table and two chairs.
A camera in the corner had a red light.
Tate sat with his wrists cuffed in front of him and looked at the light.
It had been on when they brought him in.
It had been on for forty minutes, and nobody had come.
The deputies had taken his phone at the cabin and Judah's in a separate bag.
They had taken Judah out the other door.
Tate had heard him say, "Tate, don't say anything," in a voice that cracked, and then a door had shut.
He could still feel the weight of the dog tag against his chest, under the county jumpsuit shirt.
They had not found it.
They had not looked.
At half past midnight the door opened, and his father came in alone.
Sheriff Hatchett had changed his shirt.
