Chapter 16: The Boardroom

I ran six blocks in heels with a baby in my belly, and I had never run so fast in my life.

Quincy's car met me at the second corner.

He did not say a word.

He drove through two red lights.

The boardroom doors were already closed when I reached them.

Two security men stood in front.

"Mrs. Stockwell, the meeting has started. Mr. Stockwell has instructed that you're not to be admitted."

I held up the signed order.

"This was stamped at 9:48 by a judge who restored my accounts and my shares. Read it, or call your general counsel and explain why you stopped a shareholder at a door."

One of them took the paper and read it.

He looked at his partner.

They stepped aside.

I pushed the doors open.

Thirty directors sat around a long glass table, and every head turned.

Kenneth sat at the head under a portrait of his own father.

He was mid-sentence.

"...and so, with Mrs. Stockwell's seventy-one percent confirmed in my care..."

He stopped.

"Seventy-one," I said, walking in, "is not a number you have anymore."

I put the order on the table in front of the oldest director, a gray man I'd met twice at charity dinners.

"My shares are mine. I'm voting them myself."

Kenneth smiled.

It was a beautiful smile.

"Gentlemen," he said, "I apologize. My wife has been unwell, and this is a family matter. Perhaps we could take ten minutes."

"No," I said.

"Suzette."

"I'd like to play something for the board."

"This is irregular," his lawyer said.

"So is paying three men to rape a woman," I said. "I'll be quick."
