Chapter 17: The Wire
"You're not going inside that restaurant," I said, in the front room, in front of everyone.
"I'm not asking to."
"He will kill you at the table."
"Probably."
"Then say it."
"I'll sit in a truck across the street," Joaquin said. "With you. And if it goes wrong, I'm the one who goes through the door."
My mother snorted from her armchair, which was permission.
We built the wire on my kitchen table at noon on Thursday.
It was a cab camera from one of my own tractors, the size of a matchbox, with a microphone and a cellular uplink.
Joaquin taped it under the leather band of Anselmo's gold watch, where the loose strap gave it room.
"He'll feel the weight," Joaquin said.
"It's a heavy watch," said my uncle.
"It's always been a heavy watch. That's why it will work."
At 7:40 that night Joaquin and I sat in my pickup on San Bernardo Avenue, half a block from Cardenal.
