Chapter 22: Sentence

"Down!" I screamed, and threw my whole weight into Joaquin's chest.

We hit the stage stairs together.

The shot cracked over our heads and tore a hole in the screen, right through the twelve-foot page of the ledger.

Glass rained from a chandelier.

Before the second shot could come, six of my drivers hit the gunman from three directions.

The old driver who had trained half the fleet sat on his back.

He took the pistol out of the man's hand.

"I've got him, jefa," he said, panting.

"Sit harder," I said.

Joaquin lay under me with his arms around my head and his breath hot on my ear.

"You shoved me," he said.

"You were in the way."

"You shoved me with your whole body."

"I'd do it again."

"I know," he said, and he laughed into my collar until the agents came.

On Monday at ten the courthouse steps were crowded with drivers, and the thin man from Frontera Savings stood among them with his briefcase.

He had come to sell my father's yard.

He read from a single sheet, and his voice did not carry.

"The notice of sale is withdrawn."

"Louder," a driver called.

"The note was held by Mr. Escamilla, and the United States has seized it with his other holdings."

"The government does not wish to sell a trucking yard."

A cheer went up that sent the pigeons off the courthouse roof.
