Chapter 9: Yes, I Was Paid
The board room had a table the length of a bus and a window that showed the river.
Nine people sat around it, eight men and one woman, and every one of them had the newspaper open in front of them.
Eleanor sat in a chair by the window with her cane across her knees.
She didn't look up.
"Mrs. Brennan," said the oldest man, the chairman. "We've asked your husband to explain this."
"I'll explain it," I said.
Declan stepped half a pace behind me, as I'd told him.
"Yes," I said. "I was paid."
A rustle ran around the table.
Terrence leaned back in his chair and smiled at the ceiling.
"The contract is real, and I signed it knowing exactly what it was."
I took an envelope from my purse and walked down the length of the table.
I set it in front of the chairman.
"That's the first sixty thousand," I said. "Uncashed. It's the check Declan gave me on the day we married."
