Chapter 17: Blair in the Attic
Scott took the townhouse stairs three at a time, and I ran behind him in my work heels.
The attic door stood open.
A white shape moved in the lamplight at the far end of the room.
It was Blair, in her white suit, with her back to us and her arm swinging.
I heard the sound before I saw what it was.
It was the long dry rip of a blade through canvas.
"Stop," I said.
She did not stop.
She had a palette knife from my table, the long one with the steel blade I used for mortar.
The canvas on the easel was the one I had started the night Scott watched me paint.
She had cut it from corner to corner, and then she cut it again across the other way.
The window hung open in four flaps.
Scott crossed the floor in three strides.
He caught her wrist from behind and turned her around, and the knife fell out of her hand onto the boards.
