Chapter 18: Treason

"We're getting him out tonight," I said.

Lucan paced the length of his bedroom with the contract in his fist.

"Gresham has twenty men on the tower stairs, Tilda. If I go near it, he'll say I came to silence the witness."

"You're not going."

"Then who is?"

"Me," said Pip, from the window seat, with a mouthful of bread.

"Me," said Rosalind, from the doorway.

She had come in without knocking, with her cloak over her arm and her chin high.

"The guards on that tower are the Chancellor's men. They are afraid of him, and they have been told to obey the bride in waiting."

"I would like to do something useful with the title."

It took us an hour.

Pip had the kitchen's key to the tower's old service door, where trays went up to the guard.

I had a basket with a hot supper in it and a cloth over my arm.

Rosalind had her voice.

We climbed the back stair in the dark, past the larder and the dry well.

We came out on the landing outside the clerk's cell.

Four guards stood there under a hanging lamp.

The sergeant swung up his lantern.

"No visitors. Chancellor's orders."

Rosalind stepped past me into the light.

She put back her hood and let the lamp fall on her braid and her pale blue gown.

"Sergeant," she said.

It was the voice that had called me a tent. It was cold, slow and cut like glass.
