Chapter 12: The Rogue at the Door
I didn't let him have the last word.
I walked to his table.
I picked up his coffee cup out of his hand.
I set it down in front of Celia.
"You'll want to make sure it's hot," I said.
Then I walked out.
Rhett held the door.
Behind us, nobody in the dining room said a word.
On the porch, my knees started to shake.
I sat down in one of the white rocking chairs.
Rhett sat down in the one next to me.
"Tomorrow at ten," I said.
"I know."
"If Sable doesn't come, I go north with him."
"I know."
"Rhett."
He turned his head.
"If I go north," I said, "don't come after me. He'll kill you. He'll make it look like a challenge."
He looked at me for a long time.
"No," he said.
"No what?"
"No, I won't promise that."
I spent Friday in the burned shop.
I don't know why.
There was nothing to save.
