Chapter 17: Wolf Shape
The bluff behind his house was a long white field of crusted snow running down to a stand of black pines.
The moon hung over the lake, three days off full, and every blade of frozen grass threw a thin silver shadow.
Griffin stood in the middle of it in bare feet, in jeans and nothing else.
Breath smoked from his mouth.
I stood on the porch in his big wool coat with my arms wrapped around myself.
I wanted to be near, and I wanted to be warm.
"You don't have to," I said.
"I want to."
"Is it going to hurt?"
"Not much.
"It feels like taking off a coat that's too tight."
He unbuttoned his jeans.
He pushed them down and stepped out, and stood naked in the snow with steam rising off his shoulders.
I had seen that body in lamplight, in firelight, in the dark of a van.
I had never seen it like this, pale as marble, with the moon laid across the muscle.
"Face the lake," I said.
He turned.
"Don't look back at me."
"Etta."
"I want to watch you."
His shoulders rose and fell.
Then something moved under his skin.
It started along his spine, a ripple.
His back bowed.
His arms sank toward the snow, and the long bones in them shifted, and I heard a sound.
Gold light came up in his eyes, and his head dropped.
A low rough groan tore out of his throat and thinned and became something else.
He went down on his hands.
Fur came over him in a wave, ash-blond on the back and pale on the belly, thick and moving.
His shoulders broadened.
His skull lengthened.
He stood up on four legs in the snow, and he was the size of a pony.
I held the porch rail.
The wolf turned his head and looked at me.
He had the same eyes.
