Chapter 23: Long Night
He undressed me by the window, with the snow coming down behind us.
It fell past the glass in slow, heavy flakes, and the bluff and the lake and the pines had all gone white and silent.
He did the green velvet last.
He drew the wrap tie loose and let the dress open.
It slid off my shoulders, and I stood there in the lamplight with the pearls still on.
"Keep these on," he said.
He touched the pearls.
"I will," I said.
He kissed my throat above them.
He kissed it slowly, and it was a different kind of kiss from the others.
There was no hunger in it, only certainty.
"I have something to ask," he said.
"Ask."
"I want to give you something you've never had."
"I've had you six ways this month."
"Not like this," he said.
"Lie down, Etta.
"Please."
I lay down on the bed, on my back, naked but for my grandmother's pearls, and he went to the closet.
He came back with the long white box I had hidden in his bottom drawer a week ago.
The wand.
It was big, with a soft round head the size of a plum.
"You said next time I got this," he said.
I started to laugh, and the laugh caught in my throat.
"I'd forgotten."
"I never forget what you promise."
He sat on the bed beside my hip and plugged in the cord, and the head came alive with a low, steady roar.
He did not put it on me.
Not at first.
He set it on the mattress beside my thigh and bent and kissed me.
He kissed me for a long time, on the mouth, with his hand on my cheek, as the wand hummed against the sheet.
