Chapter 11: The Half Truth

Nico didn't speak in the car.

He didn't speak in the elevator, or in the hall.

At the penthouse door he turned the lock behind us and set his keys down on the table.

Then he faced me.

"What are you three days from?"

I had spent the whole drive deciding how much of the truth I could afford.

I could not tell him I was the Ghost.

Not yet. Not with his father's pistol in a drawer and his face looking like that.

"Jillian's been selling the docks to Desmond Crowe," I said.

He didn't move.

"She took his money for it. Tuesday's key was the last payment."

"Wynne."

"I gave her three days to tell you herself. Today is the fourth day."

"Wynne, stop."

"She forged the lines under Gia's name to protect herself. She sent them to your father with a heart on them."

"Stop talking." His voice cracked on it.

I stopped.

Nico crossed to the window and put both hands on the glass.

The city lay spread out below him, hard and bright.

"Where did you get this?" he said without turning.

"Crowe slid me a drive at the docks. He said it was a gift."

"Crowe." Nico gave a short laugh. "Crowe hands my girlfriend a file with my partner's initials on it, five minutes after I tell her he's a liar."

"He told me to read it."

"He wants you to. Don't you see that? This is his whole game. Split us. Split me from Jillian, split me from my father."

"Then check it."

He turned.

"Check the key signature on Tuesday's access key," I said. "It's in your own log. You can read it without me."
