Chapter 9: The Study Door

I walked into the study before anyone told me to stop.

"Papà, wait," Gia said, with her back very straight. "Before you say anything, Wynne has something to show you."

Ottavio's eyes came to me.

"This is a family matter, Wynne."

"Then it's mine too. Gia is my friend."

He said nothing for a moment.

"Go on," he said. "Be brief."

I crossed the carpet, and the pistol sat on the desk between us.

I laid two sheets of paper in front of him, side by side.

"Jillian sent you the left one. The right one is what the server held on Monday."

"I know what they are. I read the left one an hour ago."

"Look at the right one."

He looked.

"The three lines with Gia's name aren't in it," I said. "Someone added them afterward and dated them back."

Jillian let out a small laugh.

"Ottavio, with respect, she's guessing. Backups get overwritten all the time. A clean backup isn't proof of anything."

"It is when the lines carry Gia's name and Gia was somewhere else," I said. "Ask where she was."

Nobody spoke.

"And Gia's login was used from this house at 11:13 p.m.," I said, "when the whole family was at a christening across town and Gia was holding the baby in front of two hundred people."

Gia nodded quickly.

"I was," she said. "There are photos."

Ottavio turned his head slowly.

"Nico."

Nico came away from the window.

He took the pages from the desk and read them standing up, with his thumb moving down the margin.

Then he read them again.

I watched his face.

It took him less than a minute.
