Chapter 7: The Panel

The interview for the Brightwater Pathways Scholarship was held on a Saturday in the conference room of a hospital on the east side.

Mabel drove me in the green station wagon and wore her good coat.

"Wear this," she said, and handed me a navy blazer from a plastic dry-cleaning bag.

It had belonged to her husband, and the sleeves were two inches short.

I rolled them up once, and it looked deliberate.

"You look like someone who already knows where the supply closet is," Mabel said.

"I'm going to throw up."

"Not on the blazer."

She squeezed my arm and drove away to find coffee.

The room had a long table and three people behind it.

Two were men in their fifties who introduced themselves and shook my hand.

The third was a woman with iron-grey hair cut close to her head, a navy blazer of her own and a hospital badge clipped to her belt.

"Renata Holm," she said, and did not bother with a smile. "I chair the panel. I run an emergency department. I have forty minutes before a shift, so we won't waste any."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Sit."

I sat.

She turned a page in my file.

"Brightwater pays full tuition for four years of pre-med," she said. "It goes to the student who is paying her own way and has done the most with the least. Why medicine?"

I had practiced the answer on the bus, and it left my head at once.

I said the true thing instead.
