Chapter 19: Water on the Desk
At five minutes to six that Monday, a tall man in a wet raincoat walked into the villa hall and said he was Hanna's father.
He had driven down from Zurich without stopping, and he looked at the marble staircase for some time.
"I invited my daughter to Italy myself," he told the consulate's driver, in slow and terrible Italian. "I have the letter. I have also a lawyer in the car. She will stay until Sunday, and then we will see."
The driver went away.
Hanna threw herself at her father with a howl, and he patted her back once, gravely.
"You said you were in the library studying," he said.
"I was! Only in a different library!"
"We will discuss it in the car."
He stayed in the guest wing until the next Friday, and my father never spoke to him once.
On Friday night, the night before the shareholders' dinner, the butler came to the piano room to say my father wished to see me in his study.
"Alone, Signorina."
"No," Fiammetta said, getting up.
"It's all right," I said. "I want to hear him say it."
I went down the corridor in my gray coat with the fourteenth step still in my head.
The study smelled of cigars and old leather.
My father sat behind the huge desk under the lamp, in his shirtsleeves, and for once he looked tired.
He poured two small glasses of water and pushed one across.
I did not touch it.
"It is only water," he said, almost fondly.
"I'm not thirsty."
"Sit."
I stood.
He sighed.
"Very well. I will make you an offer, and I will make it once."
He opened a drawer and laid out a single sheet.
