Chapter 18: The Will
Nobody in the chapel moved.
Fabrizio didn't look surprised.
He looked like a man whose table had finally come up at a restaurant.
"Counselor," Tiziana said, and held the folder out. "Please. I can't."
The lawyer took it back from her and put on a pair of half glasses.
He stood beside the casket and read.
He read flat and fast, so nobody could stop him halfway.
The house in Chestnut Hill to his wife.
The family office to his wife, to run as she saw fit.
The port and the construction companies to his stepson, Fabrizio Balducci.
"Whom I name to sit in my place," the lawyer read, "and to be obeyed as I was obeyed."
The old men along the wall shifted.
One of them coughed.
"To my son Marcello," the lawyer read, "should he ever recover, a monthly allowance, to be paid at the discretion of his guardian."
"His guardian," I said.
The lawyer looked at me over the half glasses.
"Mrs. Tiziana Brancato," he said. "Named here."
"He has a wife."
"The will predates the marriage."
"Then it predates his father's wish."
