Chapter 23: The Ring
The old capo came up beside me and looked down into the casket.
He didn't say anything for a long time.
"Forty years that ring was on him," he said. "I never once saw it off."
"I closed the lid," I said. "When they came in. I closed it myself."
"I believe you."
He reached in with two old fingers and touched the pale band of skin.
"He came through here," I said. "When he ran. Out the front."
"He came through here because his mother told him to."
I looked at him.
"She knows the old ways," the capo said.
"At the grave, the man who wears the Don's ring throws the first handful of dirt." He straightened up slowly. "The Families line up behind him. They kiss his hand on the way past. By the time they've walked back to their cars, it's done."
"So she sent him into a funeral home with a gun for a handful of dirt."
"She sent him for the chair," the old man said. "The gun was for you."
One of his sons came in from the foyer.
