Chapter 16: The Capo
The bocce court in Bloomfield was under the Sons of Italy hall, in a basement that smelled of sawdust and anisette.
I went down the stairs at ten that morning, alone, in my father's wool coat.
Tomo had offered to come. I told him a Millvale man at that door would close it.
Four old men in cardigans stood around a long lane of packed clay, each holding a green ball and none of them throwing.
They stopped talking when I came in.
"Slovak girl," said the oldest.
He was past eighty, small and bald and neat, with a gray suit under the cardigan and a cane hooked on the rail.
For thirty years he had sat at the don's left hand, and on Christmas Eve he had been the second man to stand and go.
"Sit," he said. "You'll want to watch the throw."
I sat on a bench. He rolled the little white ball down the lane, and it stopped against the far wall.
"You took the don's table apart in a church hall," he said. "Very well done. I enjoyed it."
