Chapter 22: Approved, Again
Shizuku did it at the harvest festival, on the jetty, in front of everyone.
The village had strung paper lanterns from the pines all the way to the water.
The shore was crowded with long tables, steaming pots, and children chasing each other round the legs of the elders.
Rice wine ran.
At sunset, the eldest councilman asked her to say a few words about the new covenant.
She went out to the end of the jetty, where the boards were new and pale.
Ryugen stood at the back of the crowd, beside Kohaku, with his hands folded in his sleeves.
He had not asked about the divorce once, in the whole day.
Shizuku took the paper out of her sash.
She held it up so the lantern light fell through it.
It had gone soft at the folds from a month of handling, with her own careful brushstrokes on it, and his bold black Approved.
"Neighbors," she said. "I have an announcement."
The crowd quieted.
She saw Chiyo, in the front, grab Ayame's sleeve.
"Thirty-one days ago," Shizuku said, "you threw me into this lake. I woke at the bottom of it. The first thing I did was to ask the dragon god for a divorce."
A ripple of uneasy laughter went through the crowd.
