Chapter 29: Everything I Spent
On the ninety-ninth day he asked her what she had decided.
He asked it in the library, at dawn, with the fire out and the dead roses showing grey through the tall windows.
Nobody had picked up the atlases from the night she had spent against the shelf.
They still lay on the floor in a heap.
He sat on the edge of the long table with a cup of tea going cold in his hands.
She stood across from him with her cloak on, because she had not been able to get warm in two days.
"You said I could ask you tomorrow," Alaric said. "After. If you were standing."
"I'm standing."
"I see that."
"Alaric." She took a breath. "I have to tell you what the second button was."
He set the cup down.
"There was a second button next to the Exit," she said. "At the Banquet I pressed that one."
He went very still.
"The door is gone, Alaric. I can't ever go home."
He did not speak.
She made herself go on.
"I have a sister. She has a dog that she thinks is a person. I had a flat with a crooked shelf. I had a job that I was good at and hated. I will never see any of them again, and I knew it, and I did it anyway."
