Chapter 13: Doctor's Orders
The door opened before she had finished folding the note.
She did not have time to hide it.
Lysander came in backward, shouldering the door, with a tray in both hands.
The tray held a bowl of broth, a spoon and a folded napkin.
He had carried it up the whole flight himself, and he was breathing.
He saw her on the floor with her bodice open and the paper cone in her lap.
He saw the note.
The tray went down on the nearest table, very carefully, and not one drop spilled.
"Give me that," he said.
"Lysander."
"Rosalind. Give me the paper."
She gave it to him.
He read it standing, with his back to the window and the grey lake light on his face.
She watched his eyes go down the page and stop at the bottom.
She had told families bad news in ER corridors for eight years.
She knew all the ways a face could take it.
His did not do any of them.
His face went perfectly still.
