Chapter 29: Terms
I didn't go down the walk to him.
I stayed where I was, on my own lawn, and let him stand on the sidewalk.
"Two things," I said.
"Okay."
"First, you apologize to Gabe. In person. For all of it, in words an eight-year-old can carry. Not a story. The truth."
He nodded slowly.
"And you take the parenting class the family court runs. Both Sundays, all sixteen hours."
"Sixteen hours."
"Every minute of it."
"Then the visits are at your mother's," I said. "Saturdays, ten to two. She supervises. If she says it's over, it's over."
"She'll say it's over if I breathe wrong."
"Then breathe right."
He looked at the porch again.
Gabe was standing in the light with Dottie's ribbon tag, watching us.
"Okay," Todd said. "All of it."
He got back into the rental sedan and drove away at exactly the speed limit.
Beau's truck door closed behind me, finally.
My divorce was final that Monday.
The judge with the beaded chain on her glasses signed the decree in ten minutes.
The house on Hillcrest was mine.
