Chapter 16: The Mate Claim
The pack lodge council room had a stone floor, a round table of dark wood, and nineteen wolves in it who all turned their heads at once.
Bram walked in with my hand in his bare one.
He had not put his glove back on.
I had my school blazer over my torn pajamas, and my hair was still full of lake wind.
At the head of the table sat Lucan Thackwray, calm in a grey sweater, plainly expecting us.
Sabrina stood at his elbow in her nightdress and a long coat.
She had been crying, and had fixed her face since.
"Here she is," she said. "The thief."
"Sabrina," said Lucan mildly.
"She broke into the archive. I caught her myself. She and a fae and a shadow-walker who can't even be seen by the wards."
A murmur went around the table.
I kept my chin up.
"I went to read a record about my own life," I said. "The door was no trouble."
"A record about a pack matter," said an old wolf on the left.
"A record about me."
Lucan folded his hands.
"Miss Quennell, nobody here wants to treat you harshly. But we have a ribbon burned, a student mauled, a pin cracked, and now a break-in. The council has the right to see what it's sheltering." He nodded to a servant, who set a wide silver bowl on the table, filled with clear water. "A simple test. Put your hands in."
I looked at the water.
It was only water.
It was also the one thing in the room I could boil without moving.
Bram's hand tightened on mine.
"No," he said.
Every head turned.
