Chapter 13: The Needle
Elliot and Tanner ran the last block to the clinic, and Tanner held his bad arm against his ribs the whole way.
They stopped outside the treatment room to catch their breath.
Through the glass panel they could see everything.
The team doctor stood by the table in a white coat, rolling his sleeves to the elbow.
On a steel tray beside him lay a syringe, a small glass vial, and a square of gauze.
Coach Kestner leaned on the wall with his arms folded.
Two trainers stood by the sink and looked at the floor.
Rory stood in the corner with both fists shut.
"Let me go in first," Tanner said.
"No," Elliot said. "We go in together."
"Elliot."
"Together, Tanner."
Tanner nodded once, and Elliot pushed the door open.
"Thurmond," Coach Kestner said pleasantly. "Good. Sit on the table."
