Chapter 20: Day Fifty-Five
On the night of day fifty-five, Elliot sat at the kitchen table at one in the morning.
In front of him lay a legal pad with no words on it.
The hearing was at nine.
The independent doctor's test was at two that afternoon.
If he lost the first, the second would not matter.
He heard bare feet on the hallway floor.
Tanner came in wearing only sweatpants and stood behind his chair.
"You're writing a speech," Tanner said.
"I'm failing to write a speech."
"Show me."
"It says the date and my name."
Tanner laughed softly and sat down across from him.
"Look at this instead," he said.
He lifted his right arm.
He lifted it straight out to the side, and then up past his ear, until the hand pointed at the kitchen ceiling.
His face did not tighten at all.
Elliot stopped breathing.
"That's one-eighty," he said.
"One-eighty-five, I think. I measured against the cabinet."
