Chapter 17: Friday
The closing hour came and went on the porch of the Rasmussen house, and I sat through it with a cup of coffee going cold between my hands.
Dutch sat on the step below me.
Nels leaned on a post with his thumbs in his belt.
Emmett stood at the rail and watched the lane.
Nobody said that it was ten o'clock, or that eleven million, four hundred thousand dollars had just stopped existing.
The landline rang inside the hall four more times and quit.
My loans were still $71,000.
I looked at the pasture, with the cows scattered red across the green, and I thought that I had never been so frightened or so clear.
Then I thought of something else, and my hand went to my stomach.
Wednesday had come and gone.
I had told Nels so on his iron bed, and I had not said a word about it since.
I took my hand away before anyone saw.
"Dust," Emmett said.
A mile down the lane, a plume rose over the cottonwoods.
It was a pickup, and behind it another, and behind that two more.
