Chapter 14: Cold Floor
I went up anyway.
"Linnea."
"I'm not asking, Jonas."
Eleven more steps, and my shoe touched cloth.
Wool, heavy and stiff, lying across the landing like a dropped rug.
I knelt on the linoleum, and the cold of it came straight through my trousers.
"Don't," Jonas said.
"Where is he?"
"Under your right hand."
"On his back, one arm out."
My palm found a chest as hard as a table.
There was no warmth in it anywhere.
I followed the coat to the collar, and above the collar a jaw gone slack, and stubble, and a nose that had been flattened by someone else's fist.
"Smoker's teeth," I said.
"He's been dead a day at least."
"How do you know?"
"He's stiff, and the floor under him is dry."
"Blood dries."
"Two shots," Jonas said.
"Chest, close, a small caliber."
"He came up these stairs, and someone was waiting."
I turned my head toward the stairwell, listening.
