Chapter 19: The Hard Way

Lila's POV

The committee met in a small room with a long table.

The chair was a gray-haired woman with half-glasses and my retake on top of her stack.

"Ninety-one," she said. "Your original midterm was seventy-four."

"I studied harder this time," I said.

"The proctor says you finished with twenty minutes to spare and checked every answer twice." She turned a page. "I've read the concern that came to us. It was written on booster club letterhead and signed by Ms. Pratt. It cites no coursework, no date and no witness."

My mouth was dry.

"Ms. Ferris, I don't like letters from donors. I like grades." She took off her glasses. "If your fall term finishes at a 3.5, the warning is lifted and this file closes. If it doesn't, we meet again in January."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Good luck, Ms. Ferris."

I walked out into the hall, and Mason was leaning against the wall, with Coach's door still open behind him.

"How was it?" he asked.

"I get a chance."

"That's all you need."

He looked tired.

I pulled him down by the front of his jacket and kissed him in front of the trophy case.

"What happened with Courtney's dad?" I asked.

"Coach told him to take it up with the athletic director. He's furious." He patted his jacket. "I'm keeping the email from Boston. Coach says save it for the right room."

"What's the right room?"

"Wherever she's loudest."

Two weeks later, at ten at night, I was at my kitchen table with six pages of notes, a highlighter and a very bad feeling.
