Chapter 23: Hands
At two o'clock on Thursday, the teaching theatre on the sixth floor had twelve trainees in it, and nobody was hiding.
Gao had hung a sign on the door that morning with her own hands.
It said *Hands. Open to all trainees. Dir. Han.* The word *Maintenance* had been struck off the booking sheet in one stroke of red ink.
Tong Yu stood at the end of the bench with a box of needle drivers.
Han Zhiyuan sat at the middle of it, in a short-sleeved scrub top with his glasses pushed up on his forehead.
In front of him lay a square of grey foam.
"I will not tell you that a good knot needs a steady hand," he said to the twelve faces.
"That is the first lie that surgeons are taught."
He picked up the needle driver in his right hand, and it shook where all of them could see it.
Nobody looked away, which Tong Yu thought was the most surprising thing he had seen all month.
"A knot is made by tension," said Han. "You find the place where the thread wants to go. Then you stop arguing with it."
The needle chattered once against the foam.
He drew the thread through, laid it over the driver, and began a knot.
It lay down flat.
A woman in the front row let out a laugh of pure surprise, and he almost smiled.
"I have had a tremor for eight years," he said. "I take a pill in the morning, and by afternoon it comes back."
"Today I have taken nothing. I wanted you to see what is left."
He held the driver out to the room. "Ask me what you like."
"Does it frighten you?" said a young man at the back.
"It did," said Han. "It does less now that I am not alone with it."
The young man hesitated. "Does it hurt the patients?"
