Knox played the clip three times, standing in the middle of the kitchen.

"I didn't say that," he said.

"I know you didn't. I was sitting right there."

"He cut out 'not.' He cut out 'for her.'" He put the phone down on the counter, very carefully. "He took my voice and put words in it."

His jaw was working under the beard.

I'd seen him angry maybe twice in two years.

He never got loud.

He just got very, very quiet, and went to wash something.

He washed a clean pan.

"I want to post the real one," he said, with his back to me. "Right now."

"I know."

"Rule six."

"Rule six," I said. "Don't."

He turned around.

"If we post it tonight, he says it's fake," I said. "He makes a video. It's his word against yours for a week, and he's better at that than us."

"So we let them think I'm going on his show."

"We let them think it for nine days. Then we show them, in his room, in front of his people."

He looked at me for a long time with the pan dripping in his hand.
