Chapter 7: The Table
I went around the side of the garage and met him on the front lawn.
It was a bright afternoon on a Tuesday, and every house on my street had somebody at a window or a mailbox.
The woman next door was watering her tulips with a hose that had run dry.
The man across the street had stopped his leaf blower.
"Britta," my ex-husband said. He spread his hands, the tape measure in one of them. "Good. You're home."
"It's my house," I said.
"It's the house I paid half the mortgage on for sixteen years," he said.
"The court gave it to me in November. You signed the paper."
"I'm here for the dining table."
He said it in his lecture voice, and kept going.
"It's my father's table. He built it, and I left it here for safekeeping, and I'd like it back this week. Maybe you've already put it somewhere. Is it in the garage?"
"It's in the garage," I said.
"Then I'll measure it."
He started up the driveway, and I stepped across his path.
I'm not a big woman, but I'm a speech therapist, and I know how to hold a pause.
He looked at me, and then past me at my porch.
The three men had come out.
They stood in a row at the top of the steps, Tanner with his arms folded, Kou with his clipboard against his chest, Mikko with a paintbrush in his hand and no joke on his face at all.
My ex-husband's mouth did something slow.
"Well," he said, loud enough for the street. "I see you've replaced me. Three of them. Do they come with a warranty?"
