Chapter 13: Mediation
Room 214 had a round table, a box of tissues, and a window that looked at a parking garage.
The mediator was a tall man with a legal pad and a cough drop in his cheek.
He did not stand when we came in.
"Sit wherever you like," he said.
"Most couples pick the chairs farthest apart."
I took the chair across the table.
Nolan sat down beside the window, which was as far from me as the room allowed.
He wore a suit, charcoal, and a tie he had knotted badly.
The scar on his chin showed where he had shaved too close.
"Three rules," the mediator said.
"Nothing here is under oath, and nothing here is sworn at."
"Whatever you say goes in my notes and the judge sees the notes."
"If you lie in here, I will write down that you lied."
He looked at Nolan.
"Mr. Keane. The court tells me you will not contest anything."
"That's right."
"Then there is nothing to mediate, and we can all go home."
"That's not what I'm here for," Nolan said.
The mediator waited.
Nolan put both hands flat on the table, the way I had on the walnut at the board.
"I want to say what I did," he said.
