Chapter 17: Which One

The wolf reached the old boat's stern before the next swell finished breaking.

It caught the ladder in its teeth, hauled itself up the rungs, and shook.

When it came over the rail, it was a man on his hands and knees on the wet deck, naked and gasping.

It was Declan.

"Felicity," he said, and his voice was nothing but air.

She turned on him with her whole face lit.

"There you are," she said. "I knew you'd come. Look, Declan. Look what she did to us."

"Give me the inhaler."

"Take Jasper." She pulled her son in front of her by the shoulders. "He's yours now. I've told him so. Hazel has her mother, and her mother has a king. Take Jasper and we'll go home, and we'll never say a word to anyone."

I could see Declan's face over the water.

I had known that face for eleven years.

I had watched it go gray and still every time her name lit his phone.

It didn't go gray now.

"No," he said.

Felicity's smile stuck in place.

"Declan."

"Jasper," Declan said, and knelt in front of the little boy. "Hey, buddy. Can I hold your lanyard? I'll keep it safe, I promise."

Jasper looked at his mother, and then at the man in front of him.

He opened his fist.

Declan took the blue cord out of his fingers as carefully as if it were glass.

He crossed the deck on his knees, because the boat was tilting too hard to stand, and he reached Hazel, and he put the inhaler to her mouth.
