Chapter 17: Her Name on the Door

By dawn there were two warrants with Damian's name and Camilla's on them.

A detective in a wrinkled coat read them to me at the kitchen table in Red Hook.

"Unlawful imprisonment, assault with a weapon, and conspiracy for Mr. Keane," he said. "Vehicular homicide and leaving the scene for Ms. Lowe."

"The boy's statement and the car were on my desk by nine last night. Somebody at the Bronx restaurant knew exactly where to send them."

"Vernon Lowe is in a cell," he added. "He's asking for a lawyer and crying for his son."

I wrapped both hands around the coffee Maeve had put in front of me.

Cillian's coat was still over my shoulders, and I had not given it back.

I told myself it was the warmest coat in the house.

It smelled like cold air and smoke and him, and I breathed it in twice before I caught myself.

"They'll run," the detective said. "Men like Keane have money in places I can't reach."

"He's not leaving the city," I said. "Not yet."

"Why not?"

"Because the Maison is the only thing he still owns."

At four that afternoon, I walked into Keane Maison with the detective's warrant in my pocket and Maeve on one side of me.

The building took up a whole corner of Fifth Avenue, with tall windows and brass letters over the door that spelled Keane.

I had drawn the first sketch for that lobby on a napkin in a Cleveland diner.

Four people in dark suits stood at the foot of the stairs.

Three of them were board members.

The fourth was Damian's lawyer, and he held the folder from the Table.

"Mrs. Keane," he said. "This is not a good time."
