Chapter 24: Mine
Noon came, and Silvio walked into the Table room in the charcoal suit that someone had left on the bed again.
The six capos stood when he opened the door.
Nobody told them to.
Bruno stood too, with a hand pressed to his bad shoulder, and the old capo at the far end bowed his head an inch.
Vittorio was already there, leaning on the back of the chair at the head of the table.
He let Silvio come all the way to him before he spoke.
"Sit," he said.
"Where?"
Vittorio pulled out the chair at his right, the one Silvio had taken at the first dinner, and Silvio sat.
Then Vittorio did something none of them had expected.
He reached into his coat and took out a heavy iron ring of keys.
It held the front door, the cellar, the safe behind the painting, the study cabinet, and the key to the gate.
He laid the whole ring in Silvio's hand.
"What is this?"
"Everything."
"Vittorio."
"I locked a door on you once, and you came through it anyway. I won't do it again."
His voice was low and level, for the whole room to hear.
"You hold the keys. Open the gate, shut it, burn the house."
"My men answer to you the same as they answer to me."
