Chapter 11: The Shower

We had slept in our clothes.

He had driven me home in silence with my hand on his thigh.

I had said nothing because every sentence I tried was too small.

In the dark he lay on the mattress with me against his chest.

I kept my eyes shut, and he stroked my hair until the light came up gray.

At half past six I heard the shower start.

I got up, walked down the hall, and opened the bathroom door.

Steam rolled out around me.

Darius stood under the spray with his back to me, his hands flat on the tile and his head bowed.

Water poured down the long ridges of his shoulders.

I took off my T-shirt and my underwear and dropped them on the floor.

I pulled the glass door open and stepped in.

He turned his head, and the water ran into his eyes.

"Amber..."

"Don't talk," I said. "Turn around."

He turned.

I stood in front of him with water drumming on my hair, and looked up the whole length of him.

He was hard already.

He stood tall and heavy between us, and I reached out and took him in both hands and watched his stomach go tight.

"Let me," I said.

I ran my thumbs over the head and down the underside, slick with water and soap.

I stroked him slowly, with a twist at the top that made his knees dip.

He said my name again.

I kissed his chest, and I kissed the center of his stomach.

I put my mouth on his hip bone and bit him, and he grunted and put his hand in my wet hair.
